Menya Musashi on Sawtelle Blvd

Opening this weekend is a new ramen shop on Sawtelle Blvd in West Los Angeles. I had the opportunity to get a preview of their ramen prior to their opening weekend and wasn’t disappointed.

Before I get on to the ramen, I think a little background on this places roots are required.  It’s named after Miyamoto Musashi, who was a legendary swordsman that was known for his double sword style. One long sword, one short sword.  You will see artwork all over the shop reminiscent of this historical figure.  I found this interesting clip on youtube where Miyamoto is discussed by Joe Rogan. He was a pretty bad ass dude.  His “double” style is why in the signature bowls they have two (double) meats.  Thin slices of fried pork cutlets (tonkAtsu) and thick cuts of braised pork belly.

The broth in the tsukemen was rich in pork and fish flavors. The noodles were flat, making them easy to slurp. The fried pork and braised pork belly were fantastic and really help this place stand out.

From outside. You may recognize this building. It was previously occupied Tentenyu.  They closed before I could write about them, but they have several locations.

Their anticipated menu. Pricing and a few items will likely change.

The ramen

I recommend adding some of this fruit vinegar to your ramen. It really was a nice addition.

The tsukemen. I got the rich version. Very strong in the pork and fish flavors. The most that I’ve encountered so far in LA.

They also have some spicy curry. I love this stuff. And, they added some pickles that really balance out that rich and spicy curry. This was my dessert 🙂

I recommend you check this place out.  They are having some special events this weekend so get out there and experience some new ramen folks.
